12-And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.
- (TR) Just as Elisha Vision went out of sight, he had to look toward the heaven to receive his gift,
you and I must look up to
receive our Help, even in our darkest hour.
- (TR) Elijah was compared to “The Chariot of Israel and the Horsemen, Elijah was to everyone a
strong force they felt like Elijah
- held back the Judgment of God, better have lost all our men of war than this man of God
- (TR) Elisha knew what was about to happen and he refused to leave his master“My Father, My
Father”
“A father to the sons of the prophets”
- (TR) If you can see what you are asking for then it is yours. If not it is not yours, Elisha Saw It. We
must SEE the Vision in order
- to obtain the vision.
- (TR) Elisha rent his clothes apart into two pieces. Separation of Elijah & Elisha just took place.
Renting of the clothes - Is a type of shadow of what just happened. Literal in one event & figurative in another.
13-He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan:
- (TR) Elisha took up the mantle that he had briefly worn before. ‘He Loved It’. He received the sign
that granted his request for a double portion of Elijah Spirit. Elijah departure made way for Elisha. Elijah became clothed with immortality. The Mantle as a legacy left behind (What legacy are we leaving behind)
- (TR) Elisha took up the mantle, not as a sacred relic to be worshipped but as a significant garment
to be worn.
- (TR) Elisha stood on the bank of Jordan. He needed Jordan to divide for him, to make way for his
business/by that he will know that God is with him.
- (TR) Jordan had to be divided to make way for Elijah to his glory. Just as the Mantel fell from
Elijah & Elisha took it up / When a brother or sister goes down we must pick up where they have left off.
- (TR) Jordan- signifies the first & last refers to military (place of war) First/Last, Good/Evil,
Life/Death
14-And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? And when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
- (TR) Elijah last miracle shall be Elisha’s first.
- (TR)The estate of Elijah is a hidden life, it does not yet appear, what we shall be.
- (TR)Elisha ask - where is the Lord God of Elijah he calls upon God, We may have lost Elijah but
we haven’t lost the God of Elijah
- (TR)As children of God we need to call upon him for direction, and speak the Word of God over
what ever we are facing. Moses used his rod as a symbol of his God-given authority, Elijah used his mantle for the same purpose. Today we use the word of God / The Word of God is the authority (Power) for us today.
- (TR)The God of Elijah will be the God of Elisha too. He is the same yesterday, today & tomorrow &
forever
- (TR)Mantle divided the water / the word of God can divide what ever we are facing. The Word of
God was given to Jesus which in return pass it on to us today
- (TR)The water (Jordan) parted & Elisha went over.
15-And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
- (TR)Sons of the prophet of (Jericho) saw Jordan divide for Elisha in his return, They gave the
same respect to Elisha as they did to Elijah sons of the prophet went to meet Elisha.
- (TR)Elisha taken from the plough, yet when the sons of prophet realized that God was with him
they submitted to him. This acceptance was a great encouragement to Elisha.
16-And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men: let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley, And he said, Ye shall not send.
- (TR)The needless search which the sons of the prophets made for Elijah.
17-And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men: and they sought three days, but found him not.
- (TR)They urged him till he was ashamed to oppose it any further, "Wise Men Seek Peace,"
18-And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, God not?
- (TR)When Elijah body could not be found, this gave Elisha an opportunity of upbraiding his
friends with their folly, Did I not say unto you, GO NOT?
- (TR)This would make them the more willing to acquiesce in his Judgments at another time.
- (TR)The sons of the prophet return to Jericho, for that is where Elisha was.
