Gehazi tells
a lie & smitten
with leprosy
5:20  But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in
not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of
him.

  • Remember back in the last chapter when the rich woman that had her son die, and wanted Elisha to return
home with her to bring her son back to life.? She had seen Gehazi in her home many times, and she did not
trust Gehazi, for she sensed that something was not right with him. There was a comment made at that time
concerning Gehazi's faith, and this brings it to light. There is something that was underhanded about Gehazi,
and she saw it when he and Elisha stayed at her home. Gehazi was the top servant of Elisha, the prophet of
God, and his right hand man.

  • Gehazi saw those donkey loads of silver and gold and all those fine garments laid out before Elisha. He
watched as they were put back on the donkeys and loaded up for their ride back to Syria. So after Naaman
left the house of Elisha and headed down the road, Gehazi ran after Naaman and caught up to him and
spoke. Notice the thing that gets Gehazi in trouble is that he spoke in the name of the Lord, when God said
nothing to him. Today that is the first thing that many religious preachers and teachers think of doing, they
want their payment for sputtering their traditions, and saying that God told them to say those words. You don't
have to listen to a preacher very long to find out what their motives are.

5:21  So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the
chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?

  • Naaman was still excited over being
healed, and when he saw this servant
of prophet of God standing there, he
wanted to know if everything was well
with the prophet.

5:22  And he said, All is well. My master hath
sent me, saying, Behold, even now
there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them,
I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.

  • The words that this evil Gehazi are speaking are from his own mind. First of all he lied when he said Elisha
told him to ask it of him. This is a bold face lie, there were not two new poor prophets of God that came to the
school, but Gehazi wanted the silver and the garments for himself. Gehazi doesn't even have the decency to
say it was his ministry, but places the plea on the children, the sons of the prophets. How many times have
you seen these beggars plead to feed and clothe the children when you know in your mind that 90 percent is
going to built one of his mansions on a religious empire to himself. Gehazi passed the blame off on the two
poor boys that just came in off the farm, only there were no boys that came.

5:23  And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags,
with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.

  • A talent is according to whose measurement you are taking, but it is a lot of silver.
A talent is anywhere from one hundred twenty to one hundred and eighty pounds,
and that is a lot of silver Gehasi asked for one talent, and Naaman is going to
give him two talents, as well as the servants to help him carry all that silver back
home. Gehazi is not only a liar, but he swore before God that he would commit
the lie before he had even done it.

  • All the time that he is doing this evil thing, Gehazi is still the number one assistant
to Elisah. He holds the second highest position in the religious world of the
prophets of God in that day. This is a type of what is even happening today, an
"ensample" of what we can expect even our our day.

5:24  And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let
the men go, and they departed.

  • Friend, you had better be careful of who is claiming to be of God, and of those things that they say are of
God. You don't have to be around people to long before they show their true colors. Gehazi intended to used
his high religious position to deceive others and to line his pockets with ill gotten gains. Gehazi is thinking in
his mind that the pension plan of the prophets of that day was not to good, and this will help out. There is no
one that will share in the take that he is storing in the tower, for in his mind he is the only one that knows
exactly what he has done. God knows what has happened here, and He doesn't like it. How many times have
you heard one of the super-preachers beg in their gimmicks and say, "Send your money today!" Wake up to
the message that God is sharing with us in this chapter.

5:25  But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he
said, Thy servant went no whither.

  • Elisha know exactly what happened,
for God's spirit had revealed it to him.
When Elisha asked Gehazi where he
had been, Gehazi swore that he had
gone nowhere and that he was going
no where. First he lied to Naaman, and
now he is trying to cover his lie, by lying to Elisha the prophet. This man is in serious trouble.

5:26  And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet
thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen,
and menservants, and maidservants?

  • Naaman was prepared to give it all to Elisha, if he just asked for it, and Naaman thought that Elisha had
changed his mind. Keep in mind that this greedy Gehazi wanted only a small chunk of the wealth for himself,
enough that he could hide from his master, but Elisha was there in spirit and witnessed the entire thing. Elisha
was even reading his mind at the time, and to know what Gehazi was thinking. Gehazi thought he got away
with something, and that he pulled the robbery off, but there will be a great price to pay for what he had done.
Old Naaman was even happy to be ripped of by this super preacher Gehazi, the thought was after all he got
something of great value for the silver. Gehazi was not doing this for the school of prophets, but for his own
    greed.

  • The lesson here is that we are to be aware of those that will preform liturgical religious duties for their own
gain. They are fakes, and you discern what and who they are by testing the fruit. "By their fruit, you shall know
them." Jesus gave that lesson in Matthew 12:33; "Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make
the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit." It doesn't take long to listen to what a
man is saying about the Word of God to see if he is producing good fruit or bad fruit. The wealthy woman
seeking help for her dead son saw right through Gehazi, and she knew that there was nothing but bad fruit
    coming from him.

5:27  The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his
presence a leper as white as snow.

  • Anybody that thinks that they can lie to a true man of God and
get away with it has to have rocks in his head. Elisha knew
exactly where Gehazi went, and what he had done. He stole
not only the silver and garments from God, but he took the
glory and honor of God that was in the mind of Naaman. To
that point of handing over the goods, it was only God that did
the Healing and it was to the glory of God. Once Gehazi took
the silver, there became a price for the healing, and the silver
never even went to the glory of God. Elisha is telling Gehazi
that in spirit he was with him ever step of the way, and I
witnessed exactly what you did and what you said in the name
of the Lord. Though you try to cover it all up, there is no hiding from a true man of God.

  • The silver and change of garments simply would do Gehazi no good as a leper, for he would be separated
from the rest of society to where those things could not be used. Friend, the most stupid thing in the world
that anyone can do is to try to rob God, and lie to Him. That is exactly what you are doing when you say that
God said something that is just not true. God knows exactly what he says in His Word, and He also knows the
intent within your mind to what you are saying. The only one that is fooled when you try to rob God is you. It is
an impossibility to rob God and get away with it, for just beyond this age of the flesh is your presence before
    the throne of God.

  • Today there are far worse thing then leprosy that God pays those that think that they can get away with sins
against him. Nobody gets away with anything, ever! For there are no unsolved mysteries in the court in
heaven. God is the judge on the throne, and there are no slick attorneys there, just you and the book and the
Judge. God has many was of paying you back for robbing his glory and honor, not only in the here after, but
right in your everyday life. God created you and this entire universe, and he deserves your praise of Him.
